St Croix Tissue and Woodland Pulp present STEM workshop to middle school students from Indian Township

Calais, ME – In early June, middle school students from Indian Township School enjoyed a weeklong Institute for Curious Youth STEM Stay-cation held at Washington County Community College.  Students attended workshops all week from groups representing Bowdoin College, MIT, UMaine Machias, the Calais CTE center, and St Croix Tissue & Woodland Pulp, among others.

The workshop given by Woodland Pulp and St Croix Tissue included information about the manufacturing sites, career possibilities in the paper industry and the engineering process used each day to problem solve at our facility.  This was followed by a chance to use this engineering process in a contest to plan and then build towers out of marshmallows and toothpicks.  Finally, students had a chance to simulate the tissue making process and made their own sheet of paper with pulp brought from the facility to bring home.

St Croix Tissue is a state of the art tissue paper manufacturing company in Baileyville, Maine.  The facility produces a full range of products for the growing national and international tissue markets, including paper napkins, paper towels, bathroom tissue and facial tissue with two new machine lines that were completed in 2016.  St Croix Tissue operates in rural Downeast Maine and its parent company is the largest employer in Washington County.  Whenever possible, giving back to the community is a priority and teaching local students about what we do at our facility and nurturing curiousity in STEM careers is a great opportunity.  Thank you for asking us to present Indian Township!
